World Games Wroclaw 2017: Day 2 Games report - Ultimate event
23 July 2017
The second day of competition at The World Games 2017 determined who would end up in the gold medal game and would also solidify Poland’s ranking as the 6th seed.
In the first game of the day, Japan picked up their first win of the championship when they defeated Poland 13-8. Although Japan only took half by 1, they pulled away in the second half for a comfortable five point victory.
In the second game, Canada took on Colombia in what was the game of the day. In the first half, Canada looked in control and took half by two points. However, in the second half, Colombia kept slowly starting their comeback until they found themselves in the lead. Canada would score on what might be the catch of the tournament to tie the game at 12’s and force the game to universe point. After a controversial call, and a couple of turnovers, one of the Colombian women was able to hang onto a hotly contested throw in the endzone for the winning catch.
Game three had USA vs Australia in a must win game for the Americans, who came out on fire. They took half by 5 points although although Australia played hard in the second, the USA squad was able to pick up one more point to win by six, 13-7.
The fourth game saw Colombia take on the host nation Poland, who was still looking for their first win. However, the undefeated Colombia team made it clear that they were not interested in letting that happen as they cruised to a six point lead at half time. Poland played a much better second half and but came up short in the end, handing the victory to Colombia with a score of 13-6. Poland continues to impress in their first appearance at a World Games in flying disc and all of their training has definitely been playing off. They have been hanging in against the best teams in the world and giving the hometown fans something to cheer about.
In the fifth game of the day, Australia met Canada in what many were expecting to be a preview of the bronze medal game. Both teams battled back and forth the whole game with highlight plays coming all game long but in the end, Canada held on for a four point victory with a score of 13-9.
The final game of the day had USA taking on Japan. A win would secure a spot in the finals for USA while a win for Japan would give them a chance at the bronze medal game and possibly more. From the first pull, USA looked in control and too much for the Japanese squad to handle as they easily took half 7-3. Although Japan started to find their legs and settle down in the second half, they couldn’t overcome the lead from the first half and USA would close the game out and secure a spot in the gold medal game with a 13-7 victory.
Today will see three medals being awarded. Although the bronze medal final hasn’t been decided yet, the gold medal game will be Colombia vs USA. Based on their previous two matches against each other – which both went to universe point – this is going to be an exciting final!
