WFDF SOTG Committee approves revisions to the Spirit Scoring System

WFDF is pleased to announce that the Spirit of the Game (SOTG) Sub-Committee as well as the Ultimate Committee have approved a revision to the Spirit Scoring System as a result of the review that was begun last year. The change to the System involves the removal of the fifth question about self-reflection (“How was our spirit compared to the other team?”) and replaces it with a new Spirit category that was felt to be missing, communication. The five scoring categories are now: (1) Rules knowledge, (2) Fouls and body contact, (3) Fair-mindedness, (4) Positive attitude, and (5) Communication.

WFDF sanctions 2014 European Disc Golf Championships (EDGC)

WFDF is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement with the Association Championnats d’Europe de Disc Golf 2014 to sanction the 2014 European Disc Golf Championships (EDGC). The event will be held in the city of Geneva, Switzerland, from 20 to 23 August 2014, in the “Centre intercommunal des sports, loisirs et nature Des Evaux.” The bid was prepared and coordinated by Paul Francz & Boris Lazzarotto, representing the TOC for the event.

BULA & WFDF 2015 World Championships of Beach Ultimate to take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates

WFDF is pleased to announce that Dubai, United Arab Emirates, will host the BULA & WFDF 2015 World Championships of Beach Ultimate (WCBU) from 8-13 March 2015. It will be the first time this premier Beach Ultimate competition for Ultimate Frisbee players will come to the Middle East. Over 1,000 athletes from 60 teams are expected to participate on the beach along Jumeirah Beach Residences.

WFDF publishes interim report of the Spirit of the Game Task Force

WFDF is pleased to announce that the interim report of the Spirit of the Games Task Force has been published for review by the Flying Disc community under this link.
“We are pleased to publish this interim report in order to inform the Flying Disc community on the current status of the discussions of the task force, led by Rueben Berg,” stated WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “We hope to generate feedback and input for these discussions from WFDF members and athletes so that we can consider all points of view in a transparent decision making process.”

WFDF launches first ever Global Disc Sports Community Survey

WFDF is pleased to announce that it is launching the first ever Global Disc Sports Community Survey. This questionnaire has been designed to gather input from athletes, coaches, administrators, tournament directors, and anyone else involved with disc sports from around the globe. WFDF hopes to get as much participation as possible in this online survey, which can be found here.
The survey is open as of today and will close on Sunday, 16 March 2014.

WFDF and PDGA Sign Memorandum of Understanding and PDGA Reinstated as a WFDF Disc Sport Organizational Member

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) and the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) are pleased to announce that they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to renew cooperation between the organizations in organizing and promoting the development of Disc Golf activities internationally. The agreement was signed last week by WFDF President Robert L. “Nob” Rauch and PDGA Executive Director Brian J. Graham after approval by their respective Boards of Directors. As part of the agreement, the PDGA will be reinstated as WFDF Disc Sport Organisational member, regaining its status as a charter member of WFDF going back to its formation in 1985.

Team USA and Flying Disc wins “Team of the Year” award by International World Games Association

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is pleased to announce that the International World Games Association (IWGA) has named Team USA as the “Team of the Year” for its performance in the 2013 Flying Disc competition. Team USA had secured the Gold Medal for the mixed gender Ultimate event in the 2013 World Games for a third consecutive time, also winning in the World Games in 2009 in Kaohsiung (TPE) and in 2005 in Duisburg (GER). Team USA had bested Australia in last year’s championship finals in Cali, Colombia.

WFDF Congress approves Argentina as regular national member

WFDF is pleased to announce that the Congress has accepted the Asociación de Deportes con Disco Volador de la República Argentina (ADDVRA) as regular national member association of the World Flying Disc Federation.
“We are pleased to welcome Argentina as a full regular member of WFDF and view it as furthering the development of Flying Disc sports in South America,” commented WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch.

WFDF Call for Sanctioned Event Bids – WFDF 2015 World Under-23 Ultimate Championships (WU23)

WFDF’s Ultimate Committee and Board of Directors are seeking bids from potential host organizers for the following upcoming sanctioned event:
- WFDF 2015 World Under-23 Ultimate Championship (WU23)
Applicants are requested to inform WFDF on their intention to bid no later than March 15, 2014. The deadline for submitting completed bids for WU23 is April 30, 2014, and it is anticipated that bids will be awarded no later than June 30, 2014.

WFDF introduces “Real Winner” online educational tool, will require participation of a limited number of competitors in 2014 WJUC and WUCC

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF), in a move to enhance its Anti-Doping educational efforts for athletes participating in the 2014 World Championships, has contracted with the “Real Winner” educational Anti-Doping online tool. WFDF is going to use the tool to educate a limited number of athletes competing in the 2014 WFDF World Junior Ultimate Championships and the WFDF World Ultimate Club Championships in Lecco, Italy. Three athletes from each team in the WUCC and WJUC events (including their captain) will be required to complete the Real Winner education course prior to the events. Information will be sent separately to participating teams over the next month.

Since 2011, fifty percent of the money that the WFDF received from the WFDF & BULA Continental and World Championships of Beach Ultimate has been put aside to invest in the development of Beach Ultimate worldwide.
Starting 2016 the WFDF will be allocating $ 5,000/year to fund ideas brought by Member Associations, or individuals, to develop Beach Ultimate. In 2016 the funds will be awarded to worthy programs aimed to start or fortify local/national Beach Ultimate leagues. The maximum amount that will be awarded for one project is $ 1,500, and smaller grant applications are encouraged.

The 2015 events, which are due to be held over the last quarter of 2015, are going to be held as follows:
AAUCC – Uganda. Sat 12th – Sun 13th September 2015 with 7 teams registered in 1 Division (Mixed)
AOGCC – Chinese Taipei. Sat 17th – Sun 18th October, 2015 with registration still open, 2 Divisions (Open, Women`s)
PAUC – Mexico. Wed 18th – Sat 21st November 2015 with 49 teams registered in 4 Divisions (Open, Women`s, Mixed, Open Masters)
AOUC –Hong Kong. Fri 27th – Sun 29th November 2015 with 25 teams registered in 3 Divisions (Open, Women`s, Mixed)
AOUC and PAUC (National teams) are held on a quadrennial basis alternating with the AOUCC and PAUCC (Club teams).
If you are interested in preparing a bid, we ask for initial indications of interest no later than 15th October 2015. The deadline for submitting completed bids for the above listed events is 1st December 2015, and it is anticipated that bids will be awarded no later than 20th February 2015 and the announcement for the event location will be 31st March 2016.

WFDF is pleased to announce that the Congress has approved the Georgian Flying Disc Federation (GFDF) as regular and the Chilean Association of Ultimate (AChU) as provisional national members of the World Flying Disc Federation. The acceptance of these two member associations brings the WFDF membership to 65 member associations in 62 countries, adding two key countries in Eastern Europe and South America to the WFDF membership portfolio.

Today WFDF released an update to the World Ultimate Ranking list for WFDF member nations who have participated in major events over the past 4 years. This update takes into the account the recent results from the WFDF World Under 23 Ultimate Championships, held from July 11 to 18 in London.
Rankings are based on the finishing position of each country’s top team in each playing division from the most recent Ultimate events as follows:
- World Ultimate Club Championships (2014), WUCC
- World Ultimate and Guts Championships (2012), WUGC
- World Under-23 Ultimate Championships (2015), WU23
- World Ultimate Junior Championships (2014), WJUC
- World Championships of Beach Ultimate (2015), WCBU
“Points are accumulated based on the finishing position of the highest ranked team for each country in each playing division, with a maximum number of points awarded to the first place team equal to the number of countries participating in that division,” explained WFDF Ultimate Committee chair Brian Gisel. “The number of points awarded is reduced by 1 for each lower finishing position. For example, in a division with 10 different countries, the highest ranked country receives 10 points, the second ranked country receives 9 points, the third 8 points and so on. These rankings will be updated at the conclusion of each major event listed above.”

The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is pleased to announce that two additional discs for WFDF and USA Ultimate (USAU) championship-level competition have been approved. The Discraft UltraStar, Web Mold II – Hot Stamp and the Yikun Sports UltiPro both were granted championship-level approval by the Disc Standards Working Group. The approval of these two discs brings the total of WFDF and USA Ultimate championship-approved discs to seven – five of which are manufactured by Discraft with a variety of molds and printing processes.

Today the World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) released its updated list of average Spirit of the Game scores by country. Inspired by the recently published WFDF Power Rankings, and started as an exercise in curiosity, this list takes into account all the teams from each country at relevant World Championships over the past four years, including the Spirit scores from the recent World Championships of Beach Ultimate in Dubai and the U23 in London. The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is pleased to announce that it has appointed Rob McLeod, also known as “Frisbee Rob,” as WFDF Director of Communications and Global Media. This newly created volunteer position will assist the officers and executive staff in the daily media and networking services like issuing media releases, identifying content and managing WFDF’s Facebook and Twitter pages, and improving the existing presence on youtube and other video platforms.
“We are extremely pleased that we were able to find someone with the media and promotion experience that Rob has within the Flying Disc sports community,” stated WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “WFDF needs to take better advantage of the evolving opportunities in social media in order to better communicate with all of WFDF’s stakeholders and audience. Rob recently spent time with the WFDF officers and staff in London for the World U23 Ultimate Championships. We had previously discussed this role with Rob and, after the WFDF Congress last weekend and hearing all of the work that the national flying disc federations are doing to grow the sport, Rob decided to enthusiastically accept this role.”

WFDF is pleased to announce that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) today has granted full recognition to the World Flying Disc Federation at its 128th Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Established in 1985 and celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2015, the WFDF is composed of 62 national member associations on five continents. WFDF had received provisional recognition by the IOC in May 2013.
“The sport of Flying Disc has been granted full recognition by the International Olympic Committee today and WFDF is extremely honored and humbled by the decision and support shown by the IOC Session for our sport today. We are very thankful to the IOC membership, the Executive Board and its administration, in particular to the IOC Sport Department and staff, for their guidance and support during the period since WFDF was provisionally recognized by the IOC Executive Board in May 2013,” stated WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch.
