The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) has nominated Finland’s Disc Golf team in the annual World Games Athlete of the Year competition. The award honors an athlete or a team for their outstanding performance in 2019 or for their social commitment or particularly fair behavior. We direct everyone to the following site and voting for “Flying Disc – Team Finland” at https://www.theworldgames.org/awards/Athlete-of-the-Year-2019-70.

Team Finland, one of 25 candidates for the award this year, defeated Germany to win the WFDF World Team Disc Golf Championships in Alutaguse, Estoniain August 2019. The eight-person mixed squad did not lose a match at the championships and this victory catapulted Finland to the top of WFDF’s world Disc Golf country rankings at year end 2019.

“We hope that all Flying Disc athletes and fans will make a strong effort to support Team Finland, Disc Golf, and Flying Disc sports by voting daily in this contest,” stated WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “We want to be sure that Disc Golf, which had been on the program of The World Games in 2001, gets the recognition it deserves as we continue to pursue its inclusion back in this prestigious multi-sports event. No matter which country you come from, no matter which Flying Disc disciplines you play, we are all one frisbee family and we need to show our solidarity.”

The flying disc community can support Team Finland by voting every day. Voting began at 09:00 CET on January 8 and ends at 15:00 CET on Thursday January 30. You can vote for your candidate once every 24 hours.

As a new rule this year, all voters must vote for two candidates at the same time, giving their primary candidate two votes and the other candidate one vote. It is hoped that this will bring The World Games community closer to each other, by introducing the athletes to more than just their own fans.

In 2019, Acrobatic Gymnastics couple Mariia Chernova and Georgii Pataraia (RUS) won the title with 159,348 votes, while the Flying Disc nominee, Seattle Riot and U.S. national team player Dominique Fontenette, made it to the finals of the competition, finishing 9th of 25 candidates. The mixed Ultimate team from the USA earned the inaugural award in 2014 as the Team of the Year for its performance in the 2013 World Games in Cali.
