WFDF Partners with E.R.I.C. and will Co-Host International Spirit of the Game Day
16 October 2017
The World Flying Disc Federation (WFDF) is pleased to announce that the charitable organization Early Recognition Is Critical (E.R.I.C.) has been designated its Spirit of the Game Partner for a two-year period through 2019. WFDF will also become a partner of International Spirit of the Game Day, presented by E.R.I.C., beginning with this year’s event on the 3rd of December.
International Spirit of the Game Day encourages communities around the world to embrace Spirit of the Game (SOTG) by hosting events, clinics and activities where players can discuss and demonstrate good spirit.
At the heart of the awareness event is an effort to promote the five core aspects of SOTG: know the rules, avoid body contact, be fair-minded, enjoy playing, and communicate respectfully. E.R.I.C. is a nonprofit charitable organization that teaches youth about cancer symptom awareness and the importance of healthy living through its Ultimate Frisbee clinics.
“We are excited to announce E.R.I.C. as our Spirit of the Game partner and to take an active role in promoting the International Spirit of the Game Day,” said Robert “Nob” Rauch, WFDF President. “E.R.I.C. is a unique partner as they are a charitable organization that uses Ultimate clinics for youth to promote cancer prevention and the importance of healthy living. WFDF continues to look for ways to promote Spirit of the Game and self-governance on the field at all of our events and we appreciate their support.”
International Spirit of the Game Day was started in 2014 by Jim Gerencser, the co-founder of E.R.I.C. E.R.I.C. is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization which teaches youth about healthy living and cancer symptoms through Ultimate Frisbee clinics and its clinic curriculum. E.R.I.C. was founded to encourage youth to be active, aware and prepared, to talk about sports, their bodies, and the sometimes very scary “C-word”, cancer! With help from Richard Moore, the chairman of WFDF’s SOTG Subcommittee, and Patrick van der Valk, the founding chairman of the subcommittee and the Spirit Director for E.R.I.C., the event has grown each year, with more than 40 cities around the world organizing events in 2016.
Under the two-year partnership agreement, E.R.I.C will contribute financial and other resources to WFDF to support its Spirit of the Game activities, and will host Spirit Clinics at each of the WFDF World Championships. The WFDF SOTG Committee will arrange to promote the International Spirit of the Game Day with all National Governing Bodies, highlighting E.R.I.C. as the event presenter. After the 2019 International Spirit of the Game Day, ownership of the event will formally revert to WFDF.
Like last year, the 2017 International Spirit of the Game Day celebrations will include a 24-hour game played around the world and a spirit map that will note event and activity locations. Prizes for SOTG Day contest participants will again be provided by a growing list of participating merchandise and apparel partners worldwide.
“We are super excited to partner with the WFDF,” said Jim Gerencser. “Ultimate and Spirit of the Game carry a strong and positive message, while our Speak Up Clinics help youth with early cancer detection and prevention. Together, we can have a positive influence on the lives of millions of people worldwide.”
