Today WFDF released an update to the World Ultimate Ranking list for WFDF member nations who have participated in major events over the past four years. This update takes into the account the recent results from the World Championships of Beach Ultimate, held from March 8 to 13 in Dubai. This ranking system provides a benchmark for WFDF’s member associations to understand how they compare against other nations in terms of performance and the depth of their elite Ultimate programs.
Rankings are based on the finishing position of each country’s top team in each playing division from the most recent Ultimate events as follows:
– World Ultimate Club Championships (2014), WUCC
– World Ultimate and Guts Championships (2012), WUGC
– World Under-23 Championships (2013), WU23
– World Ultimate Junior Championships (2014), WJUC
– World Championships of Beach Ultimate (2015), WCBU
“Points are accumulated based on the finishing position of the highest ranked team for each country in each playing division, with a maximum number of points awarded to the first place team equal to the number of countries participating in that division,” explained WFDF Ultimate Committee chair Brian Gisel. “The number of points awarded is reduced by 1 for each lower finishing position. For example, in a division with 10 different countries, the highest ranked country receives 10 points, the second ranked country receives 9 points, the third 8 points and so on. These rankings will be updated at the conclusion of each major event listed above.”
“The ranking shows the top positions of WFDF member associations and their teams resulting from participation in our top events on a quadrennial basis,” added WFDF President Robert “Nob” Rauch. “The United States of America has retained the top spot, followed by Canada. Great Britain has moved past Germany for the 3rd position and Finland moved up 2 spots from 12th to enter into the top 10. After a strong showing in Dubai, the Philippines have moved up 8 spots to 18th on the list, while India, a relative newcomer to International events, also improved 8 spots to 35th. Other positive moves were made by Sweden (+4 to 15th), Slovakia (+4 to 27th) and recent WFDF member United Arab Emirates (+3 to 39th)”.
WFDF underlined that the ranking is not used for technical reasons like ranking, seeding, bid allocation or World Games or major event qualification purposes, as those will continue to be based on division by division performance.
