WFDF Sanctioned Events in 2008

Mention of WFDF World Championships in 2008 might conjure up thoughts of Vancouver, BC, Canada, considering one of WFDF's largest events, the World Ultimate & Guts Championships, will be there from August 2-9, 2008. However, between April and November, WFDF World Championship medals will also be awarded in six other flying disc disciplines.

2008 kicks off with the WFDF World Distance Championship 2008 held April 5-7, 2008 in conjunction with Big D in the Desert, a distance competition running for the 8th time. Seven WFDF World Records have been set at various Big D events in the past. Current Open and Womens Division World Record holders Christian Sandstrom (SWE) and Jennifer Griffin (USA) are scheduled to attend, as is Christian Max Voigt (GER) who holds the Open Masters World Record. A field of 40 will converge at Ivanpah Dry Lake in Primm, Nevada (California/Nevada border) to battle for the World Championship title, and the potential of taking home a $10,000 US bonus from Innova, awarded in the Open Division should a competitor officially top the 250.00 meter mark with a PDGA approved Innova disc.

Next up for 2008, from July 1-6, is an event called the World Disc Games held in Santa Cruz, California, USA. The event will play host to six events (Disc Golf, Accuracy, Distance, Maximum Time Aloft, Freestyle and Double Disc Court), but has applied for, and been granted WFDF sanctioning to host the WFDF Freestyle Championship 2008 and the WFDF Accuracy Championship 2008 in conjunction with the World Disc Games.

July 14-19, 2008 will mark another two WFDF World Championship events, taking place in conjunction with the US Open Flying Disc Championships. This championship has not taken place for 10 years. Last hosted in Dallas, Texas, this year's event moves to Reading, Pennsylvania, USA. As is the case with the WFDF World Overall Championships (last held in July 2007 in Ithaca, NY), the US Open is a true Overall Event with athletes taking on the full range of events including, Accuracy, Discathon, Disc Golf, Self Caught Flight, Distance, Double Disc Court and Freestyle over a gruelling one week schedule. Points are awarded in each event to eventually crown the overall event champion. The US Open will play host to the WFDF World Self Caught Flight Championship 2008 and the WFDF World Discathon Championship 2008.

In August, Ultimate and Guts will be showcased from August 2-9, 2008 at the WFDF World Ultimate & Guts Championships 2008 (WUGC2008) in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Canada and the United States certainly dominated the medal podium in 2004, however several countries on the rise should create one of the most competitive fields to date in Ultimate. Guts players in the United States and Japan have been working hard to rejuvenate their sport, and hope to show the world what Guts is about in 2008.

Rounding off a busy season for WFDF, will be the WFDF World Double Disc Court Championship 2008 to be held as part of the 33rd Annual Arizona Overall Flying Disc Championships from November 6-9, 2008 in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA.
