HUI2002 Medical Information

Aloha!
James Yang here, new Medical Director. Due to unforseen circumstances, Dr. Jeff Staples has passed on the medical directorship to me. Fortunately, Dr. Jeff started assembling the medical team long ago and his excellent planning has ensured that there will be a smooth and seamless transition. I'm a physical therapist, trained in St. Louis (Wash U) and did affiliations all over the expanse of the Mid-west and hospitality of the South.... I kind of got a kick out of both being the only Chinese person for miles and getting the chance to reply with "yes, i'm Chinese but not a doctor". Our physician team is going to be led by a doctor from South Africa who will be our main M.D. in the tent while her husband is playing. Others will take some shifts, and I have another friend-player-Oahu-MD who will be available for consultation if needed.

This is a huge event and I could use more volunteers! As many of you already know, Hawaii is very expensive and we're trying to keep costs down so players's fees are as low as possible. Doctors who can work one or more 1/2 or full days, EMTs, ATs, PTs/physiotherapists, nurses who can donate some time please contact me. The situation is not desperate but I would rather have too many than too few.

My goal here is to provide you with access to everything that you could reasonably need in a large, competitive, tournament setting. On-site, we will have a large medical tent, where we will see all patients and triage injuries. Anything that we can treat on the spot, we will, including abrasions, sprains, and the occasional dislocation. Anything that we cannot treat on-site, we will send to the local hospital, St. Francis West. I will have direct ambulance services pre-arranged in case of any major trauma. NB: American medical care is very expensive. Get comprehensive traveler's insurance before you depart your home country.

The services that we will provide include on-site MDs, EMTs/First-Aid, Athletic Trainers for taping, and Massage. All services, except massage, will be provided free of charge. Our Director of Massage is Morgan Blank. Morgan has been a professional massage therapist in Hawaii for 18 years. He will coordinate a team of approximately 40 massage therapists throughout the week. Techniques offered will include Shiatsu, Swedish, LomiLomi (Traditional Hawaiian), and Thai massage.

We hope that you have a very happy and healthy tournament. Once again, any and all volunteers are greatly appreciated

Mahalo,
James
