Tournament Director

The excitement is beginning to build. I can see it in my inbox (currently at 2,944 since 3/00) and in everyone's tempo and energy. It's 75 days!

We haven't had a chance to update the web site lately because we had a lot of good recent developements to finalize. Our Directors had to make some changes to help us accommodate another 500 players. No worries, the HUI was up for the challenge and we've secured some awesome venues to provide the place for some large ultimate get togethers in Hawaii. Overcoming local small island logistics and cost has been a tough task all along for the HUI. Our accommodations team got the hotel prices as low as possible, but lately we've been trying to figure out how to feed 2500 to 3000 and pay for buses and party venues. So, here's a little detail on how we plan to spend your money.

The 2002 WFDF World Ultimtae Club Championships will be at the new Waipio Soccer Complex near the West Loch of Peral Harbor, Hawaii. Golfers will enjoy the Ted Makalena Golf Course next door and everyone will enjoy the 30 lush grass fields and stadium in the complex. This area is about 30 minutes from Waikiki near Waipahu, Hawaii. The HUI will provide daily bus service to the fields; 2 shifts in the morning and 2 shifts in the afternoon. Besides securing the fields it's our pleasure to host 4 Social Events.

8/3 Opening Ceremony at Waikiki Shell
8/7 Trade Night at Ilikai Terrace
8/9 Luau at Hawaiian Adventures Water Park
8/10 Final Party at the Ilikai Ballroom with the Mermen

Our biggest expenses are field management, busing, and dinners in Waikiki. The bus budget could be as much as $90,000, and dinner for large groups in Waikiki is over $40/person. So the balance that we decided on is a group luau dinner at the Water Park (near the fields) and enough catering to get us the Ilikai ballroom and terrace.

Beer has also been a challenge. Our choices were to use local/host bars, or serve beer ourselves in a field in the country. (There's no alcohol allowed in City Parks or Beaches). We had to balance the bus thing again, and chose to keep most of the events in Waikiki. Kona Microbrew will be served by local bartenders. We get direct sponsorship from Kona but need to negotiate with each individual distributor for player discounts. Beer prices at the luau will be $3, and TBA at the Ilikai and Shell. PLEASE, Do not sneak alcohol into the social event venues!

Our local host Bar is the Fox & Hounds just across the way from the Ilikai. And Anna Banana's will help us host pre-event parties. Rocky Dunmire has all kinds of local talent TBA and Saturday we have The Mermen for our final party.

Player registration will be managed by Ardian Group Registration Mgt. and we are making Hemp player duffle bags which will include a limited edition 2002 WUCC participant disc. Your program will be an insert in Chasing Plastic Magazine and your first newsletter will be an insert in Ultimate Life Magazine. We thank both Eric Reder and Dave Brown for their help and support of the HUI.

One of the best things we have for you is the local Aloha Committee which plans to help you enjoy your stay with Aloha. This volunteer group is self sufficent and motivated to help you get aquainted with Hawaii and get around town at no extra cost to you and your team.

Grant and SatomiIt's been a fun 2 years organizing this event, and I'm sure the next 3 months will be the best time of our lives. We welcome with open arms all of our guests, players, volunteers, media, spectatators, and family.

See you August 3 at the Waikiki Shell in Kapiolan Park, Waikiki,
